9 The first US President who visited Hiroshima

Barack Obama became the first US president who visited Hiroshima in May 2016. He paid a visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and laid a wreath at the cenotaph of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to commemorate the victims who died in the atomic blast.

8 The average lifespan of the survivors

Scientists were profoundly surprised at the effect of the radiation on survivors. Molecular biologists Bertrand Jordan discovered that the lifespan of survivors from both Hiroshima and Nagasaki was reduced to just a few years in comparison to those who weren’t exposed to radiation.

7 Hibakusha

The Japanese have assigned a term to the people who survived the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They began to be called “Hibakusha” which means “explosion affected people”.

6 A number of Koreans were killed in the blast

Among the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were Koreans whose number was estimated to be about 10% of the death toll. At the time, Koreans in Japan were forced to work as laborers in armament factories. Till today there are Korean communities in both cities.
