The Amazing St Bernard, the Only Animal to Have Won a Gallantry Medal In WWII

2 Bamse was protective of his crew and knew who was missing from roll call

Bamse was so adept at his duties that he would instantly know when a sailor was missing and was said to have even gone ashore to bring back sailors from a pub in Dundee. Bamse even saved the life of two sailors, one from being attacked by a knife wielding assailant and another who had fallen overboard.

He was known for keeping the peace and would also break up fights by jumping and lacing his paws on the shoulders of the sailors. Bamse was rewarded with a full induction as one of the official crew members of the Thorod in 1940. The ship also served as a minesweeper during the war.
