1 They don’t call it Down Under for nothing
If you go to Coober Pedy and look across the surface, you may see nothing as it’s pretty deserted. The place looks like a ghost town with a golf course and a few hotels dotting the place. But watching that will never make you believe that 3,500 people live in Coober Pedy because they all live underground.60% of the town live under the surface in caves burrowed into the ground.
2 The town is too hot to live on the surface
The town was established in 1915 when opal was discovered there. In fact 95% of the world’s opal comes from Coober Pedy. But the biggest problem facing those who rushed to Coober Pedy to make a living mining for opal found that living in the town was unbearable due to the heat. Summer temperatures rise to 40 degrees Celsius.
